Why is it so
difficult to sustain change efforts?
Organization
leaders and those who study
organizations generally agree that many business-critical change
efforts fail to meet the high expectations set for them. In fact,
research indicates that up to 70% of initiatives fall short of the
desired objective.
The reason for the shortfall seldom lies in the importance or value of
the initiative. More often than not, the cause lies in a failure to
understand and adequately attend to the cultural, political and social
issues involved—these are the human elements of change. At
Destra, we believe the strategy for change acceptance must be as
rigorous as the strategy for the technical, operational or financial
change being considered. We express this premise in the
following
equation:
Prove it to yourself
Think of a successful business improvement initiative
you have witnessed and make a list of the factors that contributed
to its success. On a separate page, identify a failed
improvement initiative and list all the factors that caused
it to fail. Compare your lists and notice the similarities
and differences, paying particular note to acceptance issues
such as clear goals, stakeholders having a shared urgency
for change, etc.
If your experience is like most of our clients’, this
exercise will highlight the importance of human factors—leadership,
communication, vision, having your voice heard and your experience
and know-how valued, the quality of the team assembled among
others. Acceptance factors can help to make or break
our change initiatives.
